Abeno Too Okonomiyaki

SAKURA-YAKI - £19.80 / YAKI-GYOZA - £6.50
MISO SOUP - £3.50 / NATTO - £3

Abeno Too is a place I visit frequently with friends in between classes at university. It's good food at cheap prices - especially their lunch menu. It's a Benihana-styled experience, but with much better food.

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake which comprises of cabbage, eggs, flour and then optional toppings, which includes pork belly, shrimp, veg, fish, squid, etc. Okonomi means what you like/want, and 'yaki' means to cook. It's then topped with bonito and seafood flakes along with okonomiyaki sauce and kewpie mayo.

If you're new to the okonomiyaki game, order the sakura-yaki (pictured) since it allows you to sample a selection. Unfortunately, it is part of their seasonal menu so try it soon. If not I'm sure there will be another similar dish. If not, try their lunch menu (12-3pm), it's such a good deal: one okonomiyaki, miso soup, rice or pickles per person, from £13.50. What I love about this place is that their okonomiyaki never fluctuates in quality/deliciousness. Their miso soup was tasty and hearty, a great accompaniment to the okonomiyaki. Gyozas were filled and really good! But their natto was a little lack-lustre, it had no 'punch' or 'kick' as I expected since it is referred to as 'Japanese marmite.' 5/5
